The first virtual reality lenses were created in 1960 by Morton Heiling in Los Angeles, California. The newest were made by Meta (Meta Quest 3S) and Apple (Apple Vision Pro).


In my opinion these are used by people who want to explore new things, fun or entertainment, since it is as if you connect to a different world and could enjoy things that in real life you can't.
